United Democratic Forces, major opposition coalition in Minsk, will decide on whether to withdraw candidates from the parliamentary race on September 21, a week before the main voting day.
The leadership of the coalition discussed the matter at a meeting in Minsk on August 31.
In a statement adopted as a result of the meeting, the coalition said that “the creation of opportunities for true public control over vote count is a necessary condition for the recognition of the outcome of the elections as expressing the will of the people of Belarus.”
The coalition urged the government to add opposition representatives to precinct election commissions before September 8.
The opposition alliance called on the international community to “adhere to international standards in the assessment of the election campaign in Belarus and reject the temptation to recognize the results of the elections announced by the authorities in return for the appointment of representatives of pro-democratic forces as lawmakers.”
The statement suggested that opposition candidates speak to voters to explain why the poll may not be recognized as free and fair.
